There is no shortage of places to stay in Bangkok, from 5 star luxury to simple accommodation. The riverside Oriental is rated as one of the best hotels in the world, and is one of the most expensive in Bangkok. There are numerous tourist class hotels around Sukhumvit and other central areas of the city. If you're on a tight budget then head for the Banglamphu district and Khao San Road.

Food and Drink

Bangkok has many good, inexpensive Thai restaurants located throughout the city, and every street seems to have at least one noodle stall. Most department stores have food halls located on the top floor where you can select dishes from numerous vendors. As you would expect there is no shortage of foreign restaurants and fast food outlets in the tourists areas of the city.

WARNING: Beware of the Samoondee Sea Food Market Restaurant which is located next to Florida Hotel on Phrayathai Road, Rajathevi. We have had reports that the restaruant is using touts to attract customers and then presenting those customer with excessivly large bills.

The city has several cinema complexes showing foreign films, many of which retain the original soundtrack. There are classical music performances, pop concerts, art shows and theatre, so boredom should not be a problem. Most of these events will be listed in one of the English language newspapers.

Those interested in Thai classical drama should visit the National Theatre, or you could visit one of the restaurants featuring classical dance.

Night Life

Coffee shops, bars and nightclubs can be found in all areas of the city. Many feature live music, rock, country and western, Thai pop music and jazz.

The most famous night life area of the city is Patpong which is located in the central business district between Silom and Suriwongse roads. Here you will find bars, restaurants and a very good night bazaar selling clothing, leather goods and souvenirs.


Bangkok has excellent shopping facilities with everything from huge air conditioned shopping malls to open air markets. The Chatuchak weekend market, across from the Northern Bus terminal, is a must for any keen shopper. Here you can buy everything from live snakes to silk underwear.

Several shopping malls have amusement arcades, there is the Siam Water Park located at Min Buri, an amusement parks in the Phahon Yothin district and Bang Na.

There is an Ice Skating rink at the World Trade Centre.
