Songkhla is located about 1320km from Bangkok on a peninsula between the Gulf of Thailand and the Thala Sap Songkhla (inland sea). The town is a hive of activity with fishing boats arriving or leaving throughout the day, and long tail boats ferrying passengers to nearby islands.
This small city is the educational centre of South Thailand with a university, research facilities, several technical colleges and a military training camp.
Air-conditioned buses leave Bangkok's Southern Bus Terminal every evening for the long (17 hour) journey to Songkhla. There is a regular bus service from nearby Had Yai which takes about 45 minutes.
Songkhla can be reached from Bangkok by train or air via Had Yai.
Songthaews circulate the city and charge a small fee to any point along their route.
